Our friends from Optimal Entertainment were provided with the honour of producing the opening ceremony of the Nelson Mandela centennial celebration rugby match betwen South Africa and Australia on 29 September from conceptualisation to completion. The event was held at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth in front of a sold out crowd.
Company directors, Shelley Nicole Christians and Michael Kwong learned many valuable lessons during the 6 months of preparation and pre-production. Although they had a very busy year, this prestigious event stood out as a highlight.
Working together with SA Rugby since 2014 has been a pleasure but this event was even sweeter with the Boks achieving a 23-12 victory over the visitors and Nick Mallet referring to the revved up crowd as the 16th player on the field.
With over 70 performers from all over South Africa, the very best local talent took to the field performing a variety acts including traditional gumboot and pantsula dances, fire dancers, cheerleaders and world-renowned singers; the crowd was immersed in the visual feast and goosebump inducing sensory explosion. The Boks may not have won the title, but winning the match following a superb opening ceremony certainly did the memory of Tata Madiba and country proud.
